Highlights: Last week on Philly Tech News (3/12/2012 to 3/18/2012)

I profiled the launch of Quewey, a Philly-based business oriented Q&A site.

The Allentown Morning Call reported on the demise of Lehigh Valley-based International Battery, a startup with high hopes for making it big with rechargeable lithium-ion cells and batteries. It went through tens of millions of venture capital funding and leaves Pennsylvania on the hook for millions.

A UK publication reported that Exton-based iPipeline was in talks to acquire Assureweb, a financial services quotation portal backed by several large insurers there. When it received $71.4 million in venture funding in January, iPipeline had indicated international expansion could be one use of the funds.

Philadelphia Media Network reduced staff at the Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com by about 40 people through a combination of buyouts and layoffs; guild management for the papers issued a letter ripping the management of Publisher Greg Osberg.

In a presentation at a forum held by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) in Phialdelphia, Comcast SVP of strategic planning Mark Coblitz emphasized the need for cable operators and their suppliers to take energy efficiency into account in the early stages of designing processes and equipment.

The witness list is set for the Senate Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee hearings on Verizon Wireless' spectrum/joint marketing agreement with a coalition of cable companies, including Comcast. The hearings are scheduled for this Wednesday afternoon.

SAP AG continued to rollout its HANA product on many fronts, including an announcement scheduled for April 10 on its database software plans. Meanwhile, some industry analysts are becoming increasingly concerned about Oracle's weaknesses. Oracle announces its quarterly earnings tomorrow (the 20th).

Philadelphia-based software firm Ascentive agreed to pay a $9.6 million settlement of a class action lawsuit for its alleged "scareware" tactics, although the company did not admit to wrongdoing.

Highlights: Last week on Philly Tech News (3/5/2012 to 3/11/2012)

I reported on Bentley Systems' 2nd annual corporate update conference call; growth seems to be picking up again and the main message I took away from the call was the emphasis on China.

I wrote about Philly & New York-based Solve Media's effort to expand its CAPTCHA branding business to pre-roll advertisements for online videos.

Netflix is looking for cable operators to partner with, but Comcast quickly said it wasn't going to play that game.

The FCC signaled that it wasn't going to give Verizon Wireless and several cable operators a quick pass on their proposed spectrum sale and marketing joint venture, requesting more (unredacted) information from all parties involved.

Fortune Magazine profiled Comcast's strategy for its NBC Sports Group to double down on sports.

The New York Post broke a story that Google was looking to unload Motorola Mobility's Horsham-based set-top box business even before the acquisition was completed. Although there has been no confirmation, many industry observers would not be surprised if it were true.

PE Hub reported on SAP Ventures' plans for its next fund. SAP Co-CEO Jim Hagemann Snabe said in an interview at CeBIT that collaboration software would be the company's next product category to expand in; that doesn't necessarily require an acquisition but nonetheless his comments got the rumor mills going again. SAP also rolled out at CeBIT what it referred to as a multitenant Cloud version of its Business One ERP suite for smaller enterprises, although some analysts questioned whether it was a true multitenancy architecture.

Exton-based Scala introduced several new offerings at Digital Signage Expo 2012, including what it calls CxO Board, a digital display scoreboard that enterprise managers can use to monitor key performance metrics.

Fisker, with its plans to produce autos in Delaware delayed, had a Karma it delivered to Consumer Reports break down almost immediately on the testing grounds.

And a somewhat altered group now said to be headed by Lewis Katz and Gerry Lenfest apparently has exclusive rights to bargain for Philadelphia Media Network; Ed Rendell's position in the group is not clear at this time.

Highlights: Last week on Philly Tech News (2/27/2012 to 3/4/2012)

I profiled the objectives, agenda and participants for the upcoming Phorum 2012 Cloud Computing Conference to be held on March 28 at World Cafe Live.

King of Prussia-based BuySide Partners (formerly A-Frame Technology Assurance) separated from A-Frame Technology Services to focus primarily on its opportunities in helping the Department of Defense improve the efficiency of its massive IT operations. I discussed BuySide Partners' plans with Managing Partner Chris Panaro.

New Jersey Tech Weekly's Esther Surden contributed an article to Philly Tech News about TechLaunch, New Jersey's first tech accelerator.

Lawrenceville, NJ-based Edison Ventures' newest fund, Edison VII, closed with $249 million raised, and as usual it hopes to invest a good portion of that in the Philly area, the Inquirer's Mike Armstrong reported.

Online advertising platform OpenX (a First Round Capital portfolio company) acquired King of Prussia-based startup LiftDNA; there is some talk that Pasadena, CA-based OpenX might be thinking about an IPO.

Philly's 3D printing and prototyping lab NextFab Studio, headed by Evan Malone, is planning a second, much larger facility on Washington Ave. in South Philadelphia, the Inquirer's Joe DiStefano reported.

A Politico reporter at a media event ran into Ed Rendell, and asked about the status of his bid for Philadelphia Media Network. He is reported to have replied that "the bids went in today" (this past Friday). Whether that quote is completely accurate or that it means there are multiple bidders is not entirely clear. As you may know, impromptu Rendell quotes may sometimes later be disavowed.

Highlights: Last week on Philly Tech News (2/6/2012 to 2/12/2012)

Questions were raised about how open Philadelphia Media Network's bidding process is after groups represented by developer Bart Blatstein and members of the Perelman family claimed they were being shut out of it. PMN (non-editorial) spokesman Mark Block actually requested that two stories about Blatstein's interest be taken down, and they were. Blatstein, who purchased the Inky building last year, threatened to start a competing paper and website. It was unclear what other bids may have been received other than one from an Ed Rendell-led group.

Oracle announced a $1.9 billion acquisition of cloud talent management vendor Taleo; some saw it as a direct response to SAP's pending SuccessFactors deal, while others wondered whether it might have had more to do with the rising competitive threat from Workday.

Newtown-based systems development outsourcer EPAM Systems, Inc. completed its IPO last week after cutting back on its offering price and size; it currently trades at $13.65 up from the initial offering price of $12, and has a market cap of $555 million.

Questions were raised concerning Fisker Automotive's viability as it faced a cash crunch when the Feds held up the balance of a $529 million loan pending a review. Fisker laid off 26 employees in Delaware and halted
subcontracting work there. The Wilmington News Journal has provided excellent ongoing coverage of Fisker's troubles.

Two Philly area companies made fairly small but potentially important acquisitions. Amazon Prime competitor ShopRunner, part of Michael Rubin's holding company, acquired California-based startup Shopsanity, which helps ecommerce shoppers keep track of data about their various purchases. And Wayne-based Kenexa agreed to acquire OutStart, a Boston-based provider of SaaS e-Learning solutions, for $38.9 million.

Bob Moul, former GM of Dell Boomi and current President of Philly Startup Leaders, got back on the entrepreneurial side by becoming chairman & CEO of Philly-based appRenaissance, a mobile app development startup.

And I wrote about a new book by Joseph Turow of Penn's Annenberg School, "The Daily You", which raises issues about how all the data being collected on us through our online activities is being used.

New York Post: Philadelphia Media Network owners hire investment bankers, sales effort already underway

The New York Post, following up on its breaking story about the possible sale of Philadelphia Media Network (owner of the Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com) this past weekend, reported today that the ownership group has hired an investment banking firm, Evercore Partners, to seek out potential buyers.

The article cites sources as saying that the company has met with at least three interested parties already, and some offers are expected in the next two to four weeks. It also says that the family of Raymond Perelman, the 94-year-old Philadelphia businessman who tried to acquire the papers two years ago, is again interested in bidding.

The Post says that investment firm Angelo Gordon initiated the sales process and hoped Alden Capital would buy its 30% stake, but that Alden, which holds a similar stake, decided it wanted to sell as well.

No word from the investors or PMN on these latest reports, the Post says.

The reported price tag of $100 million, compared to the $139 million the buyout group paid to purchase the properties in late 2010, suggests that the turnaround has not been going too well, although they have profited by the sale of the old Inquirer building. Update: The Inquirer reports that former Philly Mayor and PA Governor Ed Rendell is among those putting together a group to make a bid.
