More on out of home digital advertising startup Vistar Media

The week before last, I wrote a short post about Vistar Media receiving $1.5 million in VC funding. The startup, which has its engineering offices in Philadelphia with more customer-focused functions based in New York, was founded by two veterans of Invite Media, which was acquired by Google for a reported $80 million in 2010, and one other co-founder, Jeremy Ozen. It will use a real-tme ad bidding platform as did Invite Media except in this case it will be used to place ads on what are referred to as out of home (OOH) digital displays that might be found in prominent outdoor settings, stadiums or arenas, stores, medical offices, or other of out of home locations where numerous people may pass by or congregate.

I had a chance to speak with Ozen by phone last week. It turns out that he is a UPenn graduate (materials science, finance); in fact, that is where he got to know Invite Media and fellow Vistar Media co-founder Michael Provenzano. The other Vistar co-founder, former Invite Media Chief Architect Mark Chadwick, attended Temple. Ozen had been working for Goldman Sachs in London in its European Special Situations Group monitoring a venture portfolio before returning to the States and joining Vistar. One thing Ozen emphasized to me is that Philadelphia is Vistar's official legal headquarters, althought its website lists a New York contact address. One question I had in my prior post was about Ben Franklin Technology Ventures, one of its backers, investing in a startup based out of state.

I also found out that Eniac Ventures, a New York-based VC firm focused on the Mobile space and managed by UPenn alums (hence the name) was among the investors in the round, although they were not named in the press release. Ozen also told me that Vistar had received a previous $500,000 in angel funding last year, coming from mostly within the Invite Media circle. I didn't ask whether two Invite Media co-founders, Nat Turner or Zachary Weinberg, who have a new healthcare IT startup in New York named Flatiron Health, were part of that investor group.

I asked Ozen what Vistar saw in terms of its addressable market. He said they estimated the currently monetized domestic OOH digital ad market to be $2 billion, with another $2 billion available but not yet monetized. They have not yet sized the international market, which could be quite sizable; from my point of view the penetration of digital OOH displays may be higher in some other parts of the world than in the US.

In addition to the online bidding platform Vistar has built a la Invite Media, another critical product component it has developed is what it calls "the first ad server built specially for digital place-based media." This is important because if Vistar is going to achieve its full market potential, it needs to be able to serve ads to the widest possible universe of existing digital displays, and there are challanges to this due to barriers including intermittent internet connections, network bandwidth restrictions and a lack of standards for communicating between heterogeneous devices. Vistar believes it has solved this problem; we will see if that's fully the case because its a thorny issue. Vistar has also built an API that media firms who want to deliver their advertising directly to digital displays can use.

Another opportunity Vistar sees, according to Ozen, is in synching or correlating OOH digital display advertising with advertising delivered to individuals' mobile devices within a nearby location. That opportunity, which is very appealing to marketers, may take longer to develop.

Ozen says Vistar currently has four employees in Philly and five in New York and will be adding a few more in the coming months. WPP is a major agency Vistar is working with, and on the partner side it is working with the Wall Street Journal, Accent Health, CMT (they place ads in cabs in Philly), Adspace Mall Network and others. It claims to have 80,000 unique locations and 8 billion impressions available as part of its inventory.

Vistar Media, with Invite Media vets as founders and a Philly presence, gets $1.5 million seed funding

Vistar Media, a New York-based (according to its website) startup with a Philadelphia office, announced this week it has raised $1.5 million in seed funding led by Valhalla Partners, with participation from Mercury Fund and Ben Franklin Technology Partners. Ben Franklin's investment had already been announced late last year.

Vistar Media's founders, Michael Provenzano and Mark Chadwick, were key members of the team that built real-time bidding (RTB) platform Invite Media (Provenzano a co-founder), the Philly/New York-based startup acquired by Google for a reported $80 million in 2010. They want to bring the same technology to the out of home digital advertising market, including TVs and all kinds of video and digital displays and signage not located in the home.

Although the company has a Philadelphia presence, its unusual to see Ben Franklin back a startup not headquartered in Pennsylvania. Its Philly office seems to be mostly focused on engineering, while New York is more focused on the client side, the same type of split that Invite Media and other adtech firms such as Solve Media evolved to. Of six open positions currently listed on Vistar's website, four are client-facing jobs located in New York, and the other two are engineering jobs of which one is based in Philadelphia and the other is optional between New York and Philly.

Vistar has built out the bidding platform and already has a substantial inventory of impressions and unique locations, according to TechCrunch, and has been working with some initial beta customers.

The out of home digital signage and display market is boooming, from what I've seen in following the industry (including West Chester-based Scala), so the opportunity to help monetize and target the advertising opportunities in that market certainly exists.

Update: A spokesperson for Vistar Media confirms that Engineering is based in Philly, but
doesn't think the company has fully determined its headcount plans here yet. The spokesperson also wanted to clarify that its out of home TV advertising plans doesn't include normal over the air or cable stations, but only Internet-connected screens on which digital advertising can be inserted.

Nat Turner & Zachary Weinberg's new startup: Flatiron Health

Tom Paine

Invite Media co-founders Nat Turner and Zachary Weinberg have a website for their new healthcare IT startup live now.

Its called Flatiron Health, its located in New York City, and the site doesn't give a clue yet of what they might do in healthcare IT (but maybe they don't really know yet; that was the story of Invite Media, which pivoted a few times before finding the formula that led to an $81 million exit to Google). One open position is listed; a software engineer.

First Round Capital invests in another local internet advertising startup

Having just seen portfolio company Invite Media sold to Google for a reported $81 million, First Round Capital has helped back another Philly/New York based internet advertising startup named AdCopy, along with angel investors. AdCopy says it "leverages existing, pre-approved creative assets, like logos, icons, slogans and short brand messages to engage the consumer before they access the desired content". Specifically, the company is planning to build an advertising platform around "Captchas", those screens that make people type in a few characters to verify they are not bots.
The Philadelphia office is on South Broad and they are advertising for a senior account exec for the Philly/New York area. AdCopy's co-founders include Doubleclick (Google) alum Stu Libby and VoiceStar (Marchex) co-founder Ari Jacoby, who also had previous experience with Google.

Google/Invite Media rumors heat up again

Peter Kafka of All Things Digital (Wall Street Journal) reports that Google may be close to a deal for Philly/New York-based demand side advertising platform (DSP) Invite Media, which is backed by First Round Capital and Comcast Interactive Capital among others. There had been rumors about this a few months back. Invite Media CEO Nat Turner, who cofounded the company while an undergraduate at Penn, told Kafka by email that "we have not entered into any agreement with any company" which may seem a little short of a complete denial that something might be happening.
Turner tweeted on Friday, "Haven't gotten anything done today, just been playing Pakman on Google's homepage", which was presumably meant as a tongue in cheek response to speculation.
