eResearch Technology Down 25%

As the Dow closed just above 7,000 today, major area tech stocks held steady, with the exception of eResearch Technology (now apparently renamed ERT by some branding genius). ERT was down 25% today, and was down as much as 30% earlier in the day, after reporting sharply slowing revenue growth and reduced guidance for 2009 yesterday. The Philadelphia company provides cardiology-related IT systems and services

Jerry Jones In Town

What was Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doing in Philly on Wednesday? Not trying to unload Terrell Owens back to the Eagles.
Jones, who is the Chairman of the league’s NFL Network committee, was here with Patriots owner Robert Kraft for a meeting at the Comcast Center, presumably regarding the ongoing negotiations over the future relationship between Comcast and the NFL Network. No word on whether the meeting was productive.

Updatet on CardioNet Management Changes

A few weeks ago I reported on the somewhat surprising departure of CardioNet CEO Arie Cohen and the start of the search for a new one. Apparently, Chairman & Acting CEO Randy Thurman has quickly found the right replacement: himself (see yesterday's press release).
My guess is this result was preordained, and had little to do with Mr. Cohen's level of competency..

Blame It On SAP ?

Yesterday I ran a piece on the State of California pulling the plug on a major SAP implementation after pouring $25 million into it.
Today there is a detailed article by the Marin Independent Journal about an entirely different SAP project in California (for San Marin County) that has cost $18.6 million so far and still has major kinks to work out. Officials seem to suggest that much of the blame in this case belongs with Deloitte. The article is worth reading as it goes into considerable depth and gives a detailed breakdown of project costs.

Oracle's Acquisition Strategy

The Wall Street Journal today ran an interesting piece on Oracle's acquisition strategy, and how it continues to acquire in the midst of the current economic downturn. Oracle's stock has held up well and that gives them an excellent currency to use in what is a buyer's market. Oracle's efforts are described as being targeted primarily toward strengthening its competitive position versus SAP in the enterprise application market.
Of local note, the article gives an acquisition price for Chester-based AdminServer: $100 million plus incentives. The insurance software company was estimated to be generating about $40 million in annual revenues. No price is available yet on the Primavera Systems acquisition.
A direct link to the article won't do much good unless you are a paid WSJ subscriber, but you should be able to find it by going to Google News and searching on Oracle.

Pharma Week

This could be called "Pharma Week" in Philadelphia. In town are the ePharma Summit at the Hyatt Regency at Penn's Landing, the Clinical Trials Conference at Loews, the DIA Conference for Electronic Data Management at the Downtown Marriot, and Pharmaceutical Managed Markets Insights & Marketing for the Pharmaceutical Industry, also at the Loews. There may be a couple of smaller conferences I"m missing, as well.
Philly area Healthcare IT vendors are probably very busy giving demos or presentations, or meeting with clients and potential clients. There is also bound to be plenty of conversation about the prospects for further consolidation in Pharma in the wake of the Pfizer/Wyeth deal, as well as the implications of Obama administration policy towards Healthcare and Healthcare IT.
While Healthcare IT proponents are generally enthusiastic about the $20 billion directed towards it in the stimulus bill, I would be wary about the extent to which provisions of the bill may centralize control of a National Healthcare IT architecture at the Federal level. That could be a recipe for disaster.
