Ruling may make it hard to patent business process (Bloomberg via Boston Globe)
I think this is a very good ruling that will put an end to many frivolous patents. It will leave many IP lawyers unhappy, though.

Want to buy a major national radio chain on the cheap? Bala Cynwyd's Entercom Communications (ETM), which operates 111 stations in 23 markets, ended the day at 56 cents per share, near its recent low of 52 cents. At one point in the past year, its shares were trading as high as $19.59.
At its current price, Entercom's market cap is a mere $21.2 million. Of course, you would also have to pick up about $1 billion of debt. Have fun making the payments.
Entercom's earnings report is due on November 6. They have recently announced cutbacks in some markets.

Although T-Mobile's 3G network has been officially on in the area since the beginning of the month, I wasn't sure from some of the initial reports I read in the national media whether the Android-based G1 phone was available here yet. I checked, and it is.
Be aware, however, that T-Mobile's own coverage map suggests there is not much 3G coverage in some of the northern Pennsylvania suburbs or west of the Blue Route. I don't know if this is totally up to date, but it is their map.
A map of T-Mobile retail locations is here.

Game 1

I've got to go with Hamels over Kazmir in Game1. Its not that Kazmir isn't a very good pitcher (God knows, the Mets might be playing right now if they hadn't traded him away). But he does sometimes lack command, and it takes him alot of pitches to get through an inning, which means sooner or later the Phillies will get to him or the bullpen. His slider has never fully come back since he had some minor arm problems.
As for Hamels, he is at the top of his game, and is approaching the level of greatness he has been destined for. He probably has the best changeup in the game; it is almost magical. But he s not just a soft tosser-he can throw pretty hard too.
But the guy Phillie fans have to watch out for is BJ Upton. He could determine the outcome of the entire series. And the Phillies really need to win behind Hamels because what comes after him is somewhat questionable.
Just my opinion.

The 2008 Information Week 500 came out recently. I have some questions about how they determine it. Several on the list, including Boscov's, Fannie Mae, Lehman Brothers, WaMu, and Wachovia went bust or nearly bust recently. While these occurences weren't primarily the fault of IT, certainly one of the reasons you invest in such systems is to try and stay in business. The IW 500 is generally weighted toward larger corporations rather than smaller companies that may employ more cutting edge technologies.
Philadelphia area companies in the top 250 (which are individually ranked) are Harleysville Group (30), Vanguard Group (33), Air Products & Chemicals (67), PHH Arval (76), Wyeth Labs (88), AmerisourceBergen (127), Jones Apparel Group (148), Cigna (192), Heartland Payment Systems (210) Penske Truck Leasing (215), VRW International (219), Aramark (231), and Boscov's (241).
Others in the top 500 are AmeriGas, Ametek, Burlington Coat Factory, CDI Corp, Charming Shoppes, Ikon Office Solutions, QVC, SAP, SES Americom, Teleflex, Tyco Electronics and Unisys.
Many others on the list have a substantial presence in the Philly area.
I'd be interested in any user feedback on how this list stacks up, or who else should have been included.

Oracle to buy big project portfolio management player (Network World)
Primavera Systems. I heard more about SAP as a possiblity than Oracle. I'm guessing the price tag is probably close to a billion,
perhaps a little less in today's market environment. It would not be surprising to see more Oracle acquisition activity in the
Philly area, perhaps in the Healthcare IT or Insurance verticals.

GSI ceo Rubin on $52M Innotrac bid, sees opportunity in crash (Philly.com: Philly Deals)
I still don't really get GSI Commerce, even though they have a lot of smart people working for them and apparently make some
clients very happy. It just seems they always have to put more "assets in the ground" (distribution and call centers) and there is not too much in the way of economies of scale and leverage in what they are doing. They try to present themselves as a "mini Amazon", but Amazon has a very strong brand and web presence and proprietary platforms that reach a vast market. End users really don't know what GSI is. The current economic environment probably won't help them in achieving profitability
for a while.
