Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic focuses on how mobile healthcare startups can work with large healthcare organizations (Monday)

One thing that's important in Healthcare IT is that small startups usually can't work in
an isolated world; they have to be able to envision how their product is going to work with larger, integrated healthcare systems while meeting all the safety, regulatory and interoperability requirements that exist. On the other hand, large healthcare provider and payer organizations need startup-like talent, initiative and thinking that may be hard to obtain from within their own organizations. The trick is trying to bring these two qualities together.

Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic will be holding its Mobile Healthcare Forum on Monday (the 10th) at 5:30 at The Hub Cira Centre under the theme "The Consumerized Patient: Engaging with mobile." ( Tickets are available.)

Keynoting will be Dr. Shoshanna Sofae, the Robert P. Luciano Professor of Health Care Policy at the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, City University of New York. Her major research interests include patient engagement, patient-centered care, patient experience surveys, public deliberation to guide health policy, comparative quality and cost reporting and developing quality measures that resonate with the public. She will talk about the challenges that face patients/ consumers at present in healthcare, to which mobile apps may be a response.

She will also join a panel discussion, which will include Stephanie Hwang, BA, RN, BSN - Co-founder and Chief Clinical Officer for AirCare (aircareapp.com), a promising Philadelphia start-up focused on healthcare communications software; Chris Mayaud, MD - Founder and CEO of The Verticom Group, an active investor who has extensive healthcare, technology, and operating experience managing companies from start-up through growth phases; Kenneth Russo - Independence Blue Cross, Director, Digital Experience Center of Excellence and Director of IBC’s Consumer Digital Engagement Team; and David Brooks - Founder + CEO of Medlio, which is building tools and technology that seek to empower consumers to get more involved in the management of their own healthcare. Medlio's first tool, a virtual health insurance card, puts the traditional static insurance card— currently the only intersection between patients, providers, and payers— on a single, secure, real-time communications platform.

Both AirCare and Medlio came out of the DreamIt Healthcare incubator program in Philly.

The Forum is timely as it comes on top of some interesting recent news reports. One, earlier this week, was the announcement by Independence Blue Cross of plans to invest up to $50 million in health-related venture funds and individual start-up companies in the Philadelphia area. IBC plans to invest about half the $50 million in regional venture funds or in partnership with organizations including the University City Science Center or DreamIt Health "in funds that are building a broader base of capital to attract innovation to the region," IBC CEO Daniel J. Hilferty told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The second is a story from the Wall Street Journal reporting on the outlook of a prominent healthcare IT VC, Anne DeGheest. While positive about the sector as a whole, she sees too many seed companies and an emerging "Series B" crunch.

"There’s a tidal wave of startups like we’ve never seen before," DeGheest told the Journal. "It’s kind of like the dot-com boom, there is this rush to build a product that you can demo. Thirty-five companies presented [at a health I.T. conference affiliated with the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference]. And at CES, I lost count. The effort is all going into making a product that can be shown, but not into building a business. I don’t see enough actual business plans."

The third is a new regulation issued by HHS last week that enables patients to obtain their test results directly from the lab rather than having to request them through the physician's office.

The fourth is the apparent rapid rise of Castlight Health, a California startup co-founded by current US CTO Todd Park in 2008. Castlight, which provides software companies use to help its employees shop for healthcare benefits, has secretly filed for an IPO which reportedly could value the business at up to $2 billon.

MentorTech Ventures joins MissionOG in CloudMine round

UPenn-connected MentorTech Ventures has joined MissionOG in a new investment round in Philly-based startup CloudMine, MentorTech Managing Director Brett Topoche said via a tweet yesterday and confirmed to Philly Tech News via email. The Form D filing related to the offering dated in March said it was for up to $750,000, and that $505,000 had been raised at that time. I can't confirm the total amount raised to date, or whether there were any other investors in this round. The financing was in the form of convertible debt. MissionOG's investment had already been made public. Topoche says he will join CloudMine's board as an advisor.

CloudMine was in DreamIt Venture's 2011 Philadelphia class and raised an additional $480,000 in 2012 from investors that included Ben Franklin Technology Partners SEP and RobinHood Ventures. MentorTech's investments always have some Penn connection, and CloudMine CEO Brendan McCorkle received his Master of Science in Engineering in Computer and Information Science (a program sponsored by the school of engineering and Wharton) from there.

CloudMine competes in a hot, emerging market: backend-as-a-service (BaaS). It provides a cloud-based platorm that helps enterprises build mobile & web-based backend solutions and connect data sources such as Salesforce.com and SharePoint.

DreamIt Ventures raises stakes; files to raise up to $50mm

Bryn Mawr-based DreamIt Ventures has filed a Form D with the SEC to raise a fund of up to $50 million, FormDs.com reports.

The fund, DreamIt Fund II, L.P, reported its first date of sale as 9/28/2012 and said it had sold $1.45 million so far. The SEC filing was dated 10/5/2012.

DreamIt now runs programs in Philadelphia, New York, Austin, and Israel. I do not know how much capital DreamIt has raised in the past, but would guess this is a much larger fund than what it has raised previously.

appRenaissance acquires UXFLIP

Tom Paine

appRenaissance, the Old City Philadelphia-based mobile app development startup, made an important step towards building out its own platform by acquiring West Chester-based UXFLIP, the company will announce this morning.

UXFLIP was founded in 2011 by Michael Raber, a longtime area resident who spent several years with Nokia Navteq/Traffic.com in Malvern. It won best in show at last month's Phorum Cloud Computing Conference at World Cafe Live. appRenaissance said in statement that UXFLIP's UX/UI creation, deployment and management capabilities will be merged with the company’s mobile middleware platform, Unifeed. UXFLIP's strength is on the front end, helping users to dynamically build, deploy and manage user interfaces for native mobile apps from the Cloud.

UXFLIP was a DreamIt Ventures company (Philadelphia 2011), where appRenaissance CEO Bob Moul became familiar with the startup while serving as an advisor.

appRenaissance announced earlier this month it had raised a $1.5 million seed round led by FirstMark Capital. It was founded in 2010 by CTO Scott Wasserman and Moul joined at the beginning of the year after leaving Dell Boomi.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it wouldn't be surprising (my guess) if it included a combination of cash and equity. Raber will continue to be responsible for the development and roadmap of UXFLIP at appRenaissance. A beta version is expected to be released this summer.

UXFLIP is the second startup I know of from the Phorum Demo Pit to be acquired. ReadySetWork was acquired by West Chester-based PrimePay in March.

Guggenheim Venture Partners is now Alara Capital, and other Philly area VC news

Guggenheim Venture Partners, based in King of Prussia and Austin, is now Alara Capital, the firm has announced, and is no longer affiliated with Guggenheim Partners, LLC. Guggenheim Venture Partners managing directors Mike Burns and Eric Rothfus will lead Alara's operations.

Alara said it will continue its strategy of investing in undercapitalized technology companies with practices in distressed venture capital, early stage ventures and technology spin-outs, and will expand that focus into growth equity and active value investing with future private equity funds. Alara will manage Guggenheim Technology Ventures I, a fund begun in 2008 with a total today of $65 million in capital and stakes in nine technology companies. It is also raising money for a new fund; Pensions & Investments reported in March that PennSERS (Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System) had committted up to $10 million to Guggenheim Technology Ventures II.

GVP's portfolio has included Bethlehem-based Ciclon, which was spun off out of Agere Systems and acquired by Texas Instruments in 2009; it also includes social commerce platforms provider GreenLink of Wayne.

Mike Burns was a co-founder of Traffic.com and and was with Agere Systems and TL Ventures; Eric Rothfus was CEO of Agere and was also with TL Ventures.

The State of Pennsylvania's Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (BFTDA) has approved a $30.6 million investment to support the four regionally based Ben Franklin Technology Partners, it was
announced on Friday
. Of that amount, $16.6 million will focus the on development of alternate energy start-ups and new product innovations. It appears that the apples to apples comparison for the regional funding (excluding the alternative energy part) is $3.5 million next year vs. $4 million the past two years and $6.9 million per year before that.

DreamIt Ventures is currently working to finalize its selections (15 including 5 in the Comcast Minority Entrepreneur Accelerator Program) for its Fall 2011 Philadelphia class. Kickoff Weekend will held on September 9-10.

CloudBees, a Boston-based startup providing a Cloud Platform as a Service for Java Web Apps, raised $10.5 million in Series B funding, bringing its total investment to $14.5 million. Philly area entrepreneur (Bluestone, JBoss) and angel Bob Bickel was an early investor in CloudBees and is a board member.

John Martinson, founder and Managing Partner of Lawrencevile-based Edison Ventures, and his wife Eileen Martinson, are bringing minor league hockey back to Trenton after the recent demise of the Trenton Devils. The new team will have the name of Trenton's old hockey team, the Titans, and will be affiliated with the Flyers. Eileen Martinson is the CEO of Sparta Systems, a Holmdel-based software company. The investment is a personal one, not related to the venture firm.

Edison Ventures announced today that it is investing $5 million in Salsa Labs, a DC-based fundraising software firm.

Cross Atlantic Capital Partners of Radnor has participated in a in $12 million Series E Funding in Interactions Corporation, a Massachusetts-based provider of interactive voice response (IVR) systems for customer care. Cross Atlantic led Interactions' Series C Round last year.
