MeetMe #21 on Deloitte Fast 500, but I'd add an asterisk to that

New Hope-based MeetMe was ranked #21 nationally and #3 among Internet companies on the 2014 Deloitte Fast 500 (last year it was #3 overall), but although MeetMe is an impressive, growing company, as I explained last year its ranking by Deloitte is a bit misleading, though not intentionally so.

Deloitte's 2009-2013 growth rate for MeetMe reflects the addition of myYearbook's revenue to Quepasa's relatively tiny base after Quepasa (essentially little more than a public shell) technically acquired myYeabook in 2010 though myYearbook was the much larger company. The merged company was subsequently renamed MeetMe. So MeetMe being so high on the list is something of an aberration. Again, this is not a knock on MeetMe, which has performed well. It reported revenue of $11.6 million, up 15% from last year, and break even net income for the 3rd quarter 2014 as it continues to transition from desktop to mobile.

A Deloitte spokesperson confirmed by email last year that its methodology in the case of public companies is to take revenue from the public company's 10-K and doesn't distinguish between organic and inorganic growth.

The Philadelphia Business Journal shows what area companies made the Deloitte 2014 Fast 500.

Deloitte releases Fast 500: MeetMe #3?; Here are Philly area representatives

Deloitte recently released its Technology Fast 500 (pdf) for 2013. Prior to 2012, Deloitte had released Fast 50 rankings for major metro areas including Philadelphia, but switched last year to releasing just one Fast 500 covering North America.

New Hope-based MeetMe was ranked #3, with growth of 83,209% from 2008 to 2012. MeetMe has had impressive growth (it has declined this year due to the discontinuance of an unprofitable revenue stream and MeetMe has been transitioning from web to mobile advertising, though it has shown sequential growth each of the past two quarters). However, I think Deloitte's 2008-2012 growth rate for MeetMe reflects the addition of myYearbook's revenue to Quepasa's relatively small base after Quepasa (essentially a public shell) technically acquired myYeabook in 2010 though myYearbook was the much larger company. The merged company was subsequently renamed MeetMe. So MeetMe being so high on the list is something of an aberration.

A Deloitte spokesperson confirmed by email that its methodology in the case of public companies is to take revenue from the public company's 10-K and doesn't distinguish between organic and inorganic growth. It used a 2008 revenue base of $56,000 to calculate MeetMe's growth, but myYearbook had 2008 revenue in the $11 to $12 million range according to reports at the time. My only suggestion would be that Deloitte add asterisks with explanations in some cases.

Based on MeetMe's full year 2012 revenue of $46.7 million, a quadrupling since 2008 or growth of 300% would be more reasonable. That would rank about #300 on the Fast 500.

Note: I didn't write this as a knock on MeetMe, a company I admire and think has considerable potential. I just analytically saw a number that didn't make sense to me
and wanted to explain where it came from.

The other Philly area software/infotech companies on the Deloitte Fast 500 are:

#129 Centrak (Newtown)

#170 Universal Display (Ewing NJ)

#191 SevOne (Wilmington)

#201 InstaMed (Philadelphia)

#225 SkillSurvey (Wayne)

#235 iPipeline (Exton)

#260 Billtrust (Hamilton, NJ)

#345 QlikTech (Radnor)

#353 PHD Virtual (Philadelphia)

#373 Futura Mobility (Fort Washington)

#394 Halfpenny Technologies (Blue Bell)

#411 eMaint Enterprises (Marlton)

#430 EPAM Systems (Newtown)

#431 Beyond.com (King of Prussia)

#442 CRF Health (Plymouth Meeting)

#452 Education Management Solutions (Exton)

#483 Health Advocate (Plymouth Meeting)

Of course, several life sciences firms from the area also made the Deloitte rankings.

New Hope-based MeetMe names COO, myYearbook co-founder Geoff Cook CEO; focuses on monetizing growing mobile traffic

Tom Paine

Subscribe to Philadelphia Tech News by Email

MeetMe, the New Hope-based social networking website, announced last week that Geoff Cook had been named CEO effective March 11, replacing John Abbott, who becomes the Company’s non-Executive Chairman of the Board. Cook, who co-founded myYearbook in 2005 along with his then teenage siblings, Catherine and Dave, has been Chief Operating Officer and President of MeetMe's Consumer Internet Division. Abbott had been CEO of Quepasa, the company that acquired myYearbook in November of 2011. Quepasa changed its name to MeetMe in June 2012, and the myYearbook platform was rebranded as MeetMe later in the year and integrated with Quepasa's Latin American-oriented social network. The overwhelming majority of MeetMe's pre-merger revenue came from the myYearbook platform.

Prior to helping start myYearbook, Geoff Cook, 34, founded EssayEdge and ResumeEdge while a student at Harvard University in 1997 and sold it to The Thomson Corporation (now Thomson Reuters) in 2002.

MeetMe also announced its 4th quarter and full year 2012 results last week (see transcript of earnings conference call). Pro forma (non-GAAP) results comparing the annual revenue of myYearbook and Quepasa combined increased grew 31% to $46.7 million for 2012 over 2011, although 4th quarter revenue grew only 23% over the prior year's 4th quarter. Net loss for the year was $10.3 million, but a non-GAAP measure MeetMe uses, Adjusted EBITDA, was positive $3.9 million for the year, an improvement from a loss of $1.3 million in the prior year. Cash and cash equivalents at year end were about $5 million, down from $8.3 million a year ago.
Geoff Cook

Cook, in a telephone interview with Philly Tech News, says one of the challenges MeetMe faces is monetizing its rapidly growing mobile traffic at at least the same rate as its web-based traffic, a challenge Facebook also faces on a larger scale. Mobile now accounts for 60% of MeetMe's daily audience. While Mobile accounted for only 5.8% of MeetMe platform revenue in Q4 2011, it now accounts for 22%. Despite this rapid growth, in Q4 2012 revenue was $0.13 for each daily active user on the web, compared to just over $0.03 for each mobile DAU. While overall traffic continues to show growth (MeetMe daily active users, DAU, increased 14% over the Q3 average to 1.261 million, although the absolute number of page views has dropped during the mobile transition), obviously this wide gap between mobile and web monetization could impact future revenue growth. As Cook said in last week's earnings conference call, "in the near term, the challenges associated with the shift of our users to mobile will affect operating results, until the monetization of mobile expands sufficiently."

Monetization of mobile users will require different approaches, Cook says. The first initiative is a premium subscription service, MeetMe Plus, the first stage of which will be introduced in late March. While the mobile platform has proven less amenable to traditional web advertising due to the small screen size and other factors, Mobile may be easier to monetize in terms of subscriptions because it has a built in payment platform (virtually every MeetMe iPhone user has a credit card on file with Apple), making the purchasing process much easier. The first phase of MeetMe Plus will contain four key benefits for subscribers: the suppression of ads within mobile applications; bonus virtual currency every month; discounts on any subsequent virtual currency purchases; and the ability to see which other users have viewed their photos and which photos they viewed. Additional MeetMe Plus features will be rolled out over the course of the year.

The second mobile monetization effort is centered on native advertising, Cook said, through which relevant native content ads will be inserted directly into a MeetMe user's mobile live feed. The first phase of this initative will begin in late March, in sync with the MeetMe Plus launch, working with a single partner initially.

Another area of expansion for MeetMe in terms of broadening its addressable market has been through adding additional languages to the platform. Late in Q4, MeetMe launched in French, Italian and German, and early this year added Russian, Japanese and traditional Chinese. Although these newer additions are still at an early stage of development, MeetME's MAUs (Monthly Average Users) from outside the US and Canada has grown from 16.7% in June 2012 to 44% in December.

MeetMe's focus is on what it calls "social discovery", or helping people meet new friends. Although it competes with broader competitors such as Facebook to some extent, it has a distinct set of competitors within the social discovery niche, such as Tagged and Badoo, according to Cook. MeetMe's demographics in terms of age have changed somewhat. Where it was originally aimed more at the high school audience, as its core user based has grown older and MeetMe has broadened its marketing appeal the median user age has increased from about 18 to 20, Cook says, and MeetMe's current target market is users in the 20 to 30 year old age group.

MeetMe currently has over 150 employees, about 130 of whom are located in New Hope. Most of the rest are in New York. The company has been strengthening its senior management team. David Clark will be joining MeetMe as Chief Financial Officer on April 2nd from NutriSystem, where he has served as CFO since 2007. Co-founder Catherine Cook continues to serve as MeetMe's VP Brand Strategy.

MeetMe's primary data center operations are based at an Equinox facility in New Jersey, although the company does use Amazon Web Services' EC2 for some functions.

Quepasa acquired myYearbook for $100 million in 2011, which included $18 million in cash and $82 million in Quepasa stock. Publicly traded Quepasae changed its listed name to MeetMe and ticker symbol (NYSEAMEX: MEET) last year. In addition to reaching the Latino market, the Quepasa acquisition made it possible for myYearbook to become part of a publicly listed company without doing an IPO. First Round Capital was an early investor in myYearbook (the story was that FRC's Chris Fralic lived not too far down the road and stopped in one day), to be joined by US Venture Partners and Norwest Venture Partners. MeetMe currently has a share price of $2.54, and a market cap of $94 million.

A look back at PTN's "Young Companies To Watch" from a year ago: 10 of 30 acquired

Tom Paine

Young

Companies

To Watch

Taking a look back at Philly Tech News' "Young Companies To Watch" list as it stood in July 2011, 10 of the 30 startups have been acquired since then, including the top four. I'm guessing that Accenture's recently announced acquisition of Octagon Research Solutions will be the largest exit in terms of valuation, though no word from principal investor Edison Ventures yet. myYearbook was acquired by Quepasa Corp (now MeetMe) for $100 million, though that was mostly in stock. Estimates I've seen from the Indian press for the price CSC paid for AppLabs, the software testing firm founded by Sahsi Reddi and co-headquartered in Philadelphia but having most of its headcount in India, suggest it might have been as high as $200 million. Portico Systems was acquired by McKesson for $90 million.

Active Network acquired StarCite, the once high-flying corporate meeting management site that had faltered a bit durng the recession, for about $51 million in stock and cash. Philly-based cloud unified communications provider Alteva was acquired by New York-based Warwick Valley Communications, an old-line local telco that is essentially remaking itself in Alteva's image, for $17 million. Mobile payment startup Venmo moved to New York last year and was recently acquired by Braintree for $26 million. Yardley-based MobileMD was acquired by Malvern-based Siemens Healthcare for a price that hasn't been disclosed, but the exit probably produced a good IRR for its investors. Safend was acquired by Massachusetts-based Wave Systems for $12.8 million. SEO software vendor ClickEquations was acquired by ICG partner company Channel Intelligence for an undisclosed amount and subsequently sold to Acquisio.

Mortgage tech startup ISGN moved its headquarters to Florida. appMobi appears to have moved at least in part from Lancaster to San Francisco. Exton-based iPipeline received a $71.4 million VC investment earlier this year.

Philly Tech News' "Young Companies To Watch" is my somewhat objective, somewhat subjective, imperfect ranking of Philly area startups in terms of their potential. I use whatever bits of financial data that are available, and other metrics that are indications of market acceptance. Also considered are factors such the background of founders, quality of investors, amount of investment (though not always a good indicator), the quality of their proprietary intellectual property, and industry recognition. Not interested in revenue for its own sake, but rather the potential for profitability, competitive advantage and market value. It includes only privately-owned companies or firms in which publicly-traded companies have a minority interest. You can see the current version on the right sidebar.

I'm always interested in hearing from anyone who wants to provide information that helps me provide a more accurate picture.

myYearbook completes rebranding as MeetMe; New Hope-based Quepasa now MeetMe, Inc., trading as MEET (NYSEAMEX)

The well-known myYearbook brand name is now essentially history, as the planned transition to MeetMe has been completed. The transition of the Latin-language Quepasa social network to the MeetMe platform will not be completed until later in the year. New Hope-based Quepasa Corp (now MeetMe, Inc.) stock is now trading on the NYSEAMEX under the symbol MEET.

myYearbook parent Quepasa reports solid growth in first full quarter of combined operations

Tom Paine

New Hope-based Quepasa Corporation (NYSEAMEX:QPSA), the entity that acquired myYearbook late last year and is set to rebrand as MeetMe later in the year, announced its first results as a combined company for a full quarter yesterday.

First Quarter revenue of $10.8 million represented a 30% increase over the combined total of what the two companies reported separately for the same period last year. Quepasa reported a net loss of $1.9 million and a non-GAAP measure of "Adjusted EBITDA" of $673,00. I had some difficulty reconciling all elements of cash flow from Quepasa's financial statements (maybe my fault), but cash & cash equivalents of just over $8,000,000 at the end of the quarter were down about $250,00 from year end.

The company said during its earnings conference call it had launched its mobile virtual currency across its iPhone and Android platforms during the quarter, and that early adoption looks promising. Monetizing mobile users is seen as being very important because a majority of Quepasa visits now come from mobile devices and the company feels users will be more likely to make purchases from the mobile apps because the transaction is simpler to complete. Mobile revenue now accounts for 14% of revenue and is growing rapidly. Monthly active users during the quarter totaled 3.2 million, up 62% from a year ago, the company says, although that is a fairly small percentage of the 81.5 million registered users reported. During the first quarter of 2012, a "Locals" feature was also introduced on the myYearbook mobile apps and web site, which encourages more connections between users on a local basis.

Quepasa says its plans to rebrand as MeetMe and transition both myYearbook and Quepasa to a common platform, which I reported on when they were announced last month, are on track, with myYearbook's switchover scheduled for July and Quepasa's later in the year. Quepasa also says it expects to be available in six languages by year end, versus the three I believe they are currently available in.

The company said it believed it is too early for them to start providing guidance, since they are still working to complete the integration process. Quepasa's current market cap is $138 million, and its share price is largely unchanged since yesterday's earnings announcement.

Quepasa (myYearbook parent) to become MeetMe

Tom Paine

Quepasa, the New Hope, PA-based parent of popular social media website myYearbook, held a conference call yesterday to introduce new branding for its website properties. myYearbook will become MeetMe by July, and the conversion will also occur on its Quepasa site (popular mostly in Latin America) later in the year. MeetMe.com is up, though right now it just contains some of the slides from yesterday's presentation. Also, Quepasa reportedly paid $450,000 to acquire the Meet.me domain.

Quepasa acquired myYearbook last year for $100 million, primarily in stock. myYearbook was the bigger fish, however, and the acquisition was probably structured the way it was (rather than the other way around) because Quepasa offered a pre-existing publicly traded vehicle (NYSEAMEX:QPSA). Quepasa also provided a platform for expanding internationally as well as into other languages (Spanish & Portuguese right now). Quepasa today claims 78 milion registered users, about half with myYearbook and half with Quepasa, though myYearbook generates about three quarters of the revenue. The company will also change its ticker symbol to MEET over the summer.

Though Quepasa's top management is very capable, I thought they overreached somewhat in comparing themselves to three companies: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. While competitive with two of these in page views, they lag considerably in terms of unique monthly visitors and monetization. I doubt Twitter's page view stats are directly comparable since you don't navigate through Twitter page by page. While Facebook is said to be valued at $100 billion, LinkedIn at $10 biilion according to its current stock price and Twitter reportedly worth several billion, Quepasa's present market cap is less than $150 million. I get the point that management is talking about potential rather than the present, but I still find it to be a bit of a stretch. My impression of Quepasa is that it has a relatively small (about 4 million uniques per month) core of very heavy users who generate a lot of page views, but the key is to grow that base. Quepasa positions itself relative to these megaplatforms as being the one you go to for meeting new people, as opposed to Facebook (connecting with people you already know), LinkedIn (people you know profesionally), and Twitter (exchanging information).

Quepasa emphasized two trends: mobility and globalization. Its says its mobile usage is exploding, and they are just in the early stages of monetizing it, though it says it already has the "top-grossing social app on Android". The company believes the new brand name, as well as having a single unified platform, will be much better suited to the global market. Why throw away a great, well recognized brand name? The company didn't quite address that. Obviously Yearbook is more of an American term, and may not carry well into other parts of the world. The other big issue that wasn't really discussed was demographics in terms of age. myYearbook, as the name implies, was definitely geared to high school age kids. I'm sure Quepasa wants to keep these users as they get older, in addition to attracting other older users, but the company didn't really address this issue. Originally, myYearbook was intended to provide a somewhat protected environment for teens to socialze in.

Quepasa also discussed increasing non-advertising revenue, particularly through its virtual currency. Advertising now accounts for 85% of revenue, and Management sees virtual currency providing an increasing contribution. Quepasa also said yesterday that it expects to achieve positive EBITDA by the end of 2012. Plans for adding additional languages and expanding to other regions were mentioned, though no specifics were given.

myYearbook was founded in 2005 by three Cook siblings: Catherine and Dave, who were high school students at the time, and Geoff, who now serves as Quepasa COO. First Round Capital was an early investor.
