Moore Partners With Philly's U School for Exhibition Showcasing Students' Interest in Technology as Tool for Civic Engagement
Open Windows: Online/Out Loud, is an exhibition featuring projects created by students from Philadelphia’s U School high school in collaboration with the Open Windows program—an innovative education initiative developed by The Galleries at Moore. The U School high school experience centers learning on a process called "design thinking," an approach to creative problem-solving that begins with understanding the needs of the user.
The Galleries’ Open Windows is an in-school and after-school program that empowers teens to transform their creativity and interest in technology into tools for positive civic engagement. The Open Windows: Online/Out Loud exhibition, on view through July 2, 2016, will showcase two projects completed by U School students participating in the Open Windows program:
Instagram with a Purpose: A Collection of Digital Campaigns
For this project, students created social media campaigns addressing the issues that matter most to them, including teen depression, police brutality and education funding. After analyzing social media posts by political, social issue and advertising campaigns, students worked in groups to create their own posts using photographs, videos, text and graphics. The exhibition will feature large-scale prints and videos from these campaigns, as well as an instructional guide created by U School students for other teens and educators interested in launching their own social media campaigns.
The Emotions Game
For this project, students created a multi-player conversational card game addressing teen emotions and self-expression. Based on the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, students designed a unique deck of “emotion cards” that illustrate 20 different emotions through creative writing, photography and digital design. The exhibition will feature prints of the emotion cards artwork plus free Emotion Game decks with hands-on demonstrations by students. A mobile app featuring the Emotions Game will also be available for download and sharing in the fall of 2016.
Open Windows: Online/Out Loud is on view through July 2, 2016.
The Open Windows program is made possible by the generous support of Moore College of Art & Design, the Thomas Skelton Harrison Foundation and the Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation.
