Three Philly Area Companies Receive Smart Grid Grants

Three Philly-area utility companies received grants under the "Smart Grid" program unveiled by President Obama today:

  • PECO, Philadelphia:
Deploy 600,000 smart meters and supporting sytems ($200,000,000)

  • PPL, Allentown:

Deploy a distribution management system and smart grid
technologies to monitor and control the grid in real-time ($19,054,516)

  • PJM Interconnection, LLC, Valley Forge

Deploy over 90 phasor measurement units and other
digital monitoring and analysis technologies across 10 states that will provide real-time data on the operating conditions of the transmission system, improving reliability and reducing congestion. ($13,698,091)

Atlantic City Electric Company also received a grant for $18,700,000 to improve grid efficiency.
